Install Solutions

Verifying Fedora media SHA1SUM
This howto will show you how to verify Fedora media downloaded from an official Fedora mirror.
Using rpm.livna.org in FC6 and later
Ananconda, the installer for Fedora Core, is capable of using external RPM repositories during install. It's quite easy to use. Follow the steps below to add the livna repository during you install decreasing the amount of time required to setup your system.
How Much Space?
This is a Small Guide on How Much Space you should reserve for your Fedora Core installation, and where to allocate the space. Of Course, this will not be valid for 100% of cases, but is a general frame.

Network Solutions

Fix problems of miscellaneous network services
A bug in anaconda and another in system-config-network can lead to a broken /etc/hosts file. This results in various networking services not starting or otherwise missbehaving.
Networking Fundamentals

Peripheral Solutions

Canon Pixma iP1500
This article focuses on the step-by-step process on installing printer driver for iP1500, but may also apply to iP1000, iP2200 and iP4200, with some minor changes in the procedure.
Configuring a 5 Button Intellimouse to work in FC
Configuring an advanced input device like this Intellimouse with 5 buttons can be tricky. While this method was tested on Fedora Core 4 it should work on other versions of Fedora Core and could also be modified for other Linux distributions.

Server Solutions

iptables Howto

Fedora Core: Connecting to an ADS Server
As many Fedora Core users may note, there are times when Windows just does not cut it, and you would rather be working on your data in Linux instead of Windows. During those times you may find it necessarry to connect to a Server 2003 ADS. This soulution came about for just one such ocassion. We are not going to cover the requirements in this procedure as this solution is not recommended for a new Fedora Core user, this is tailored for an advanced user that would have the knowledge to join a domain with their Fedora Core machine. Also assistance will be required from the Administrator of the domain, should that not be you!!
Installing Fedora Using PXE Images
Booting grub with the Fedora PXE vmlinuz/initrd images allows you to perform a network installation of Fedora over any existing linux distro, should you not be able to write to or boot from the conventional CD/DVD install media. A PXE netinstall can both be done locally, and with extra care, remotely using VNC. Both methods are explained in this HOWTO.

Post-Install Solutions

Installing Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Client on Fedora 8
The Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Client is a remote access client that allows people to connect to applications available on central servers. The purpose of this how-to is to resolve the "missing dependency : libXm.so.3" problem that you face when attempting to install it on Fedora 8.
Setting Up Bittorrent and Bittorrent-Gui
BitTorrent is a client application for the torrent peer-to-peer (P2P) file distribution protocol created by programmer Bram Cohen. BitTorrent is designed to widely distribute large amounts of data without incurring the corresponding consumption in server and bandwidth resources (and typically, monetary fees attracted as a result of that). The original BitTorrent application is written in Python and its source code has been released under the BitTorrent Open Source License (a modified version of the Jabber Open Source License), as of version 4.0. The name "BitTorrent" refers to the distribution protocol, the original client application, and the .torrent file type.
How to Change Runlevels
Many people get confused when trying to boot in to a runlevel other than runlevel 5, for example runlevel 3, disabiling the GUI front end with which most users are familiar. Hopefully this howto will help answer the questions "How do I disable X" or "How do I boot without X" or even "How do I get to single user mode."

Security Solutions

iptables Howto

SELinux Module Building
Building modules for SELinux to allow specific actions. This also covers the basic concept(s) of testing if SELinux is the culprit. This howto is specific to Fedora Core 5.
Securing SSH
This howto outlines a few extra steps that can be taken to further secure a SSH server, chiefly from the constant onslaught of automated brute-force password attacks.

Browser Solutions

Sun Java Development Kit Installation
This is the safest method of installing the Sun Java Development Kit (JDK) which can be used to for compiling programs in Java. If you have the JDK installed, you do not need to install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) since it is already included in the JDK.
Netbeans IDE install
This will show how to install the opensource Java IDE Netbeans. One of the more popular and easy to install IDE's with lots of additional features.
Installing Sun Java browser plugin
This howto will show you how to painlessly install the Sun Java broswer plugin. You should be aware of several potential risks before you start. 1. Fedora uses gcj which is a free version of Java, but it is not Java. There are potential mix-match problems that can arise when compiling some applictions on development machines. 2. If your system is slow you may run into problems as Sun Java tends to be CPU and RAM intensive. 3. If you're running an x86_64 system and compiling 32bit applications without the proper chrooted environment it will most likely not work. The main purpose for this howto is only for a browser solution. If you need more in-depth instructions please see the howto here by Scott Glaser or the IcedTea howto by jmahowald. That said let's get started.

Gaming Solutions

Installing Steam Using Wine
This howto covers Installing Steam onto your Fedora using Wine.
Finity Flight II
This will install Finity Flight II Episode III: Beast's Wish. However this howto applies to all Finity Flight II Episodes I-III.

Video Solutions

Using 3rd Party Video Drivers
There have been a number of bugs reported in Red Hat bugzilla against X which have recently been tracked down to 3rd party video drivers being the culprit behind the problem the user was experienced. In many of the cases however, it wasn't obvious that the 3rd party drivers were at fault because the user was actually using the Red Hat supplied drivers, and not using the 3rd party driver that they had previously installed.
Configuring an ATi card using YUM and the LIVNA Repository
There are now ATi driver RPMs provided by rpm.livna.org that are designed especially for Fedora. If you're using yum, and you're using our suggested yum configuration, you should be able to install the drivers easily.
Installing the drivers as provided by nVidia
We suggest using the nVidia rpms from the rpm.livna.org repository. Some people report problems once in a great while. If you are one of those people here's how to install the nVidia drivers if the RPM doesn't work (or if you don't want to use the RPM):

Multimedia Solutions

Audio capture in Skype and other devices
If your skype test call doesn't give your voice back then you may have to enable your "microphone capture" an your "mic boost" devices. Note that this aren't the "microphone" device. This also applies to any other program that need microphone capturing, as the ekiga VoIP service, and is not skype unique feature.
Totem-Xine movie player supporting video/audio non free.
Totem-xine is a simple but powerfull movie player, this version is in livna.repo, and is linked against xine-lib unlike Fedora totem package, which is linked against gstreamer. Support for DVD playing will also be added.
