- Sometimes installs don't go perfectly, particularly with graphical installs, but once the system is up and running and updated things are usually fine. This page is intended to get the user installed and up to date then get the system up and running in X and back to normal. This page is written specifically about installing or upgrading using the CD or DVD installers, however some of the information here could very likely be also used for Live media.

- It is often useful to be able to easily paste text to our Fedora Pastebin at http://fpaste.org and this simple script will do that and return the resulting URL so that people may examine the output. This can hopefully help folks who are for some reason stuck without X, working remotely, or any other reason they may be unable to paste something into the pastebin.

Configuring Synaptics using HAL

- By default since Fedora 11 ships with Tap disabled in the Synaptics touchpad. There are many methods to re-enable this, or to tweak other settings but until a configuration utility is created, the ideal way is to modify it in the HAL configuration. By doing this, each user will have the same settings, it will not be desktop-specific, and will not require setting up additional startup scripts, running synclient, or creating a xorg.conf file. Any setting you would normally do with synclient (either manually, via startup script, or in xorg.conf) can be done in the HAL configs as shown in the following example.

Setting System eth0 to go online automatically at boot

- A design decision was made in Fedora 11 to not put the network devices online by default at login time. The user is required to manually put the devices online, and then manually set them to come online on subsequent boots. A bug was logged, but the decision was made that it was set this way by design, and hopefully there are further enhancements to improve the user experience in this regard coming in Fedora 12, but didn't make it into 12 or 13, now maybe 14...

- Fedora ships with a reasonable configuration for most users, however, some tweaks can be applied if you're using an LCD. Additional improvements to font rendering can also be applied if you wish to enable a patent encumbered font renderer. The method to do each of these, separately, are outlined below. I suggest doing both to maximize your font appearance! In addition to these font rendering changes, there is also information for adding additional fonts to Fedora in the sections following. Please note that some suggested changes in this document can be very subjective based on individual preferences, hardware used, etc. The Troubleshooting section goes into some more detail in this regard and should be considered before making changes.

- Lexmark is finally supporting their new (2009 or later) inkjet printers in Fedora and a few other distributions, and they work pretty well. However they do not officially support 64 bit and the installer fails unless you install some 32 bit libraries. This guide explains the correct libraries to install, and if any caveats are found they will also be listed here.

- For most people, Network Manager works rather well and is quite nice for switching between wireless networks or wireless and wired networks. However, Network Manager is not necessarily the best solution for all usage scenarios. This guide explains step by step how to switch from Network Manager to the network service. The scope of this document will be limited to switching from Network Manager to the network service and the tools around it, but will not attempt to explain how to set up the network service for every variation of possible network configurations.
