FAS VoIP HowTo

This HowTo explains how to use your free SIP account on Fedora; using ekiga.

Applicable to Fedora Versions

Requirements

You need a fresh installation on Fedora and make sure that Ekiga is installed. Also, you need to set up an account in the Fedora Account System (FAS)
  1. Install Ekiga, in case it is not installed.
  2. Get a FAS account. Follow the steps at: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/accounts/

Doing the Work

Basic description of what will be done and what is expected.

  1. Prior to configuring Ekiga you will need to login to your FAS account at: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/accounts/
  2. Select the VoIP option from the left side menu options.
  3. Next to VoIP Settings select (edit).
  4. Next to Active:, select Enabled to enable your SIP Account.
  5. In the Password section enter your desired password. NOTE: Your Asterisk password needs to be numeric only and should not match your Fedora Password. You will use this password to log in to asterisk not your normal user account password.
  6. Once those settings are made select Save!
  7. Log out of the FAS system.
  8. Install ekiga:
  9. su -c 'yum install ekiga'
  10. In the upper menu bar select Applications > Internet > IP Telephony, VOIP and Video Conferencing.
  11. Follow the prompts of the first time configuration asistant.  NOTE: It is not a requirement to setup an account with the Ekiga Free Server.
  12. Open Edit>Accounts
  13. Click on "+ Add"
  14. Enter your info accordingly:

Use your FAS username and your VoIP password (not your FAS password); which you can consult by accesing your FAS account; on the VoIP seciton.

This should take care of the account setup. Now, you can be reached at <your username>@fedoraproject.org. You can also get voice mail and talk to other Fedorans.

Schedule and Make a test call to somebody you know that has a VoIP account at the fedora project.
