Beryl is an OpenGL accelerated desktop that seeks to provide a free, open source desktop experience to the community that reflects the wishes of the users. Above all else, the project seeks to listen to and respond to the requests of the user base. This will go through the steps of installing it.
Applicable to Fedora Versions
- Fedora Core 6
Requirements
- You will need 3d video card that supports direct rendering and a driver which supports GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap.
- You will need to have Yum set up for the Fedora-Extras repository. FC6 is by default set up this way.
Doing the Work
- Install Beryl for gnome:
- To start you will need the Beryl Manager activated. This will activate it.
- If you want Beryl to be activated on boot you will need to beryl to the startup programs list, this can be found in the following menu location:
su -c 'yum install beryl-gnome'or for KDE:
su -c 'yum install beryl-kde'
System -> Preferences -> More Preferences -> Beryl Manager
System -> Preferences -> More Preferences -> Sessions -> Startup Programs tabor (from the command line):
gnome-session-propertiesThen add beryl-manager to the Startup programs.
Troubleshooting
How to test
- If beryl doesn't start correctly (the beryl splash screen doesn't
appear when you log in), it may be necessary to remove or move a configuration file. Enter this on a command line to do this:
mv ~/.gconf/apps/gnome-session/rh/%gconf.xml ~/.gconf/apps/gnome-session/rh/original.%gconf.xml
